Hi all This is a layout that has been in the planning for some time, the layout is going to be in my garage and be based on the 'Railway Series Sodor' as from Series 4 I don't class the TV Series as canon in my opionion.
There are going to be several features that the layout will incorperate. It will be a largish loop, with hopefully three mainlines.
Features the layout will include
Tidmouth Station (large Tidmouth Sheds (Vollmer hopefuly) Shunting Yard.
Knapford Junction for Thomas Branchline
Possible features Quarry, will add more things closer to time.
Rolling Stock will incorperate Hornby Thomas and Bachmann Thomas, my main issue with Bachmann Thomas is engines such as James cant pull more that 2 coaches (if anyone has a solution for this please let me know)
Once built I intend to film Railway Series Stories.
If anyone has any tips please let me know, although I have no films yet my youtube channel is DoctorTankEngine.
Little bit of news, my dad has started to get some wood together i.e baseboard, mid year recess next week so we hope to get the baseboard down that week, doing some more sorting 2day. Vollmer Shed has arrived, very happy!!!! Already planning the layout. starting a video diary of what is planned, and going through construction, stay tuned!;D
My you tube name is DoctorTankEngine, feel free to add me as a friend! WIll do a new video Diary soon
If I may suggest something, I would strongly recommend that you build the layout boards as a series of 4'x2' or 6'x2' modules. Even if you intend to make it a permanent layout, having it designed to break down into smaller modules means that if you ever move house, you don't have to entirely dismantle the layout. A close friend of mine has had to tear down too many layouts over the years because of house moves, etc.
I would also recommend using Peco Streamline small radius points and flexible track rather than set-track as the only use a little more length than set-track points, but save you alot in width which will allow you to pack more sidings and station platforms in a given space (not to mention they look alot more realistic and run alot more smoothly.)
Ok, well alot of hard work has gone on between me and my Dad after the last two months clearing the garage. Now teh fames are built and the baseboards down, so here is so photos of the work. Like a canvas before an artist paints a........... anyway. not much to show, but to quote Gordon, we all have to begin somewhere dont we. Layout is 15ft by 7ft
This is what will be Tidmouth Sation, and Yard plus turntable and sheds
And finally what will be Ffarquhar yard, as RWS accurate as possible, the tracks were to give me a rough idea of space for Ffarquahr yard in general. the gap into the middle area of the layout, will have a lift in and out piece of layout so its easier to get in and out, but will make a complete loop when finished. Just means you dont have to bend down everytime you want to get into the middle.
ok well starting some railway series conversions of locos this is the start
thats my bassis for Annie and Clarabel, arrived this morning, 3 coaches for £10 ;D
this will be my Railway Series Duck, now I know the Dome is the slightly pointy one, may try and alter this or leave it, and say that Duck had it altered recently at Crovans Gate. I have coreect name plates, and a face too, so we will see
My dad has just painted the front tanks Green, (as for some reason they are black at the front) the Humbol Dark Green Matt is pretty much accurate, so very pleased!! When dry im adding the Number plates on the side, got a question though
The number plate on the buffers, I guess I just paint over it in red, any advice on a colour of red, or is it mix and match?
Very happy with him and he runs sooooooo smooth, much better than any hornby loco i have. Really heavy too.
Very impressive, I'm looking forward to seeing how this pans out.
I'm about to start filming sum stuff for SiF One, but I highly doubt as much time will go into building each set as you appear to be, mind you, it is to a smaller scale, but I have space restrictions! Mine will be according to the TV Series, it'll be interesting to see how your sets in your photos compare with my own, in terms of difference between destinations according to RWS and TV series.
The scale of the task you have started undertaking appears rather challenging.
Thankyou for your kind words, all of you, as I have mentioned, the layout is loosely based on Sodor, Tidmouth Station wont be exact, nor will the yards or sheds, although I hope they will be impressive! ;D but hopefully Ffarqhuar will be pretty accurate, give or take a few sidings!
Work on Duck has gone well this evening, front tanks painted pretty well, colour pretty close too. And accurate number plates are on.
Now what are the best colours for Annie and Clarabel, Knux suggested an orange colour (burnt siena) I prefer a darker clour like raw siena, how about mixing the two, I like Sponges Annie and Clarabel colour too.

great colour for annie and clarbel, i looked at a map of thomas branch line and the only thing that i can see that your have trouble on is the compicated amount of bridges by the harbour and meeting place of main line.
Ladies and Gentleman, I am proud to reveal my Railway Series Duck, I am quite proud with how he has turned out as it is my first attempt at such a thing. My thanks goes to Knuckles who has given me tips and advice on the matter. My only issue with him (Duck that is not Knuckles ) is the Dome is slightly pointed, but i think i will leave this and say that he had altered at Crovans Gate hehe. oh and Knux was right, I had to totally demolish the smokebox door to get the face on, oh well
anyhow enjoy, would like to know what you all think
