Be me, An Amtrak driver serving the Washington state area during the late 80's and 90's.One day, I was to operate a new diesel engine they had ordered from GE. Several weeks later I was one the platform and I see a group of executives, apparently they are from a company in Redwood "Nintendo". Amongst one of them was a Japanese man who scoffed at the train in front of him and he boasted the superiority of the shinkansen. Was I offended? No. But I wanted to shut him up. Soon it was time for me to drive the train I pulled out like normal and approach a straight bit of track, I put the throttle at full speed and dash down the track. I didn't slow until I passed about the 10th red signal (after all, it was the last one before the next station. I pulled into the station and see the Japanese man from earlier, he is scared out of his wits. I showed him alright not to slander my engine.
Farmer Finney had fallen on hard times, and decides he has to sell Terence. One day Thomas is puffing past Terence's new field when he sees the poor tractor being driven around by the new owner, who is shouting about the end of the world. Concerned for his friend, Thomas puffs closer. "Hello!" he calls. "I'm Thomas." "The end is nigh, Thomas!" replies the man. "I'm Farmer Geddon."

One day The Fat Controller and his wife were going to a friend's wedding in Cronk. As they began to board Henry's stopping train, the station master called out to TFC to get some documents signed. TFC disembarked and proceeded to sign the papers. Unfortunately for him, the guard had blown his whistle and Henry started.
"Oh-no!" exclaimed TFC. "How am I going to get to the wedding now?"
"Where is the wedding, Sir?" asked the station master.
"The Express goes through there..."
"Great! Get me a ticket for it as quick as you can!"
"...but the train won't be stopping, Sir." The station master added, apologetic.
"Well the next train to there is 3 hrs and the wedding starts in 1! What am I to do?"
The Station Master rolled his eyes innocently and and made a small gesture with his hand.
"Well sir, there is ONE way I can help you"
TFC stared. He sighed as he dispensed a £20 note into the open hand.
"Well Sir. We can arrange for a request stop for you. if you come with me we can discuss it with the guard."
So with hand on shoulder, the Station Master lead TFC to where the guard was busy checking the loading of the baggage van.
"Sir Topham has missed his train to Cronk and requests a special stop there with the Express. Would you be able to arrange a stop?" He winked discreetly.
The Guard smiled and, same as his colleague, made a small gesture under his clip board.
"I'm sure I can arrange something" he said once the twenty was exchanged.
"We'll just let the driver and fireman know"
Gordon simmered quietly at the platform, while his crew made their final preparations for the journey.
"The controller wishes to make a request stop at Cronk as he missed the last train to it. Would you mind sorting something out?"
"Well...I don't know about that" Said the Driver scratching his head. He looked up at the fireman. "What d'you think?" he asked.
"Well it's against regulations and the express is an important train"
TFC sigh heavily. He looked in his wallet and gave the men his last two twenties. No Sunday Roast for him this weekend.
"Thats not a problem, Sir" the driver said as he checked the note. "Leave it with us"
TFC Smiled and the Guard and Station Master escorted him to a coach.
"Well I must say, I'm truly grateful that you will stop the train for me at Cronk" he said.
"Even if it did cost me £80"
"Oh, the train won't be stopping there" the Station Master said as he opened the carriage door. TFC starred at him in disbelief.
"But you said the train passes Cronk along the way!"
"It does" The guard butted in "But it won't be stopping. It is an express train, you know."
"But how am I to get out?"
"We'll slow it down as we enter just enough for you to jump out"
"I'm not sure about this" TFC said "But if it's the only way for me to get there, then I have no choice"
He boarded the train and Gordon steamed away grandly. The Station Master then telephoned Cronk Station to explain what was happening.
Soon the train was approaching Cronk station. Gordon's crew gave 3 blasts on the whistle to signal TFC that they were about to slow down. TFC made his way to the first carriage and the guard was there waiting for him.
"Now as soon as we enter the platform, I'm going to open the door. Now it is important that you start running the second you jump out of the coach to which you can slow down and you'll be fine. Right here we go!"
The platform loomed into view and there was Lady Hatt waiting on the platform. Gordon began to slow as the guard opened the door.
"Good luck, Sir!" He called "Now!"
The moment the train entered the station TFC jumped off and began running along the platform as fast as he could. He moment his feet were on the platform, the train began to pick up speed again. So there TFC was, running along the platform towards his wife like the opening sequence to Chariots of Fire, getting out of breath and feeling a massive stitch coming on. Just as he was begining to slow down, the last coaches entered the platform. Suddenly the door on the last coach opened and passenger retched out, grabbed and dragged TFC on board.
Inkwright: Yeah. It's terrifying.

MrMilkDuctor: The only time where I think sir Topham hatt was treated like boss someone not to mess with was in sodor lost treasure

MrMilkDuctor: Am having a feeling the reason why they made so goofy was because of the media making him like a bad controller after all the Henry controversy

OJ: I never liked TFC being a joke character either. In Buckled Tracks and Bumpy Trucks the public don't take him seriously. That's bad as he's supposed to be in charge of the railway and he's also a father figure to the engines.

OJ: The milkshake scene in Marvelous Machinery was a really bad Fat Controller moment too. He's alsomt turned into Homer Simpson.

waltwiz1901: (Re: media controversy) Could be. While I will admit to still liking Brenner-era Thomas, the way some of the characters are handled, especially the controller, is really all-over-the-place

MrMilkDuctor: You can’t also put all the blame on Brenner I think he would’ve made the era even more better if just Mattel wasn’t on his ears all the time constantly changing plans/script
Oct 12, 2021 3:26:59 GMT
The Thomas Cynic: (Re: Brenner) Yes, MrMilkDuctor, but at the same time you can't put all the blame on Mattel. As soon as something happens in the show we don't like, we can't just assume Mattel is behind it and did it to spite us or something.

Nicholas: Though the Brenner era didn't do wonders for TFC, I'd argue Brenner himself was careful to make the comedy around him incidental and not through his own buffoonery, such as the visual comedy of the inspector trying to take the slip of paper from him in JBS
Oct 12, 2021 11:11:23 GMT
Nicholas: The main exception to that, somewhat unusually, though, would be in The Adventure Begins, which is Brenner-penned but still sees TFC mishandling telephones and falling about quite a bit.

aspiegurl: I read a quote about if you were near an on steam engine because of the heat of the boiler and the sounds of it, "you'd swear it was alive." Is it different for us because of our show? Like I wonder if I'd need A Day Out With Thomas one to feel the effect.

Inkwright: Watch the episode Fish from Season 4 and you'll see how they were able to bring steam engines to life in a realistic and stunning way.
