Philip’s Big Mistake
After the fiasco that was the previous story, the Fat Controller was now stretched for motive power for Thomas’ Branchline because its three main engines, Thomas, Percy, and Toby were in the Steamworks undergoing repairs, and Mavis was too busy at Anopha Quarry to help out. He was still coming to a decision, when he suddenly had an idea. Yes, I’ll see if I can spare them. He quickly grabbed his hat and hurried out of his office to get his car.
The Fat Controller’s car pulled up in the car park at Norramby Station. Arthur, Rosie, and a dark green Bulleid Pacific named Isaiah looked over from the shed to see him walking up to them. “Good morning sir!” Arthur called. “Good morning Arthur, and good morning Rosie and Isaiah.” The Fat Controller replied. “Sir, what brings you here to Norramby?” Isaiah asked. “Yeah, you only come here if there’s an emergency.” said Rosie. “Indeed there is,” the Fat Controller replied, “As you may or may not be totally aware, Thomas, Percy, and Toby are in the Steamworks being repaired, leaving poor Mavis alone on the Ffarquhar Branchline. Now, I have called the manager here at Norramby and he says that he can spare an engine to help her out, and I’ve settled on you, Rosie.” Rosie was excited. “Oh Sir! Thank you Sir! I won’t let you down!” “That’s good,” said the Fat Controller, “Now I shall see you at Ffarquhar later, I have some other matters to attend to.” With that, the Fat Controller left. Rosie’s driver and fireman climbed aboard and got her ready to leave. “See you later, Rosie!”Arthur and Isaiah called. “See you later!” Rosie replied, and she left Norramby and onto the Main Line.
Ffarquhar Station Yards…
Mavis was waiting in the Yard when she heard a familiar whistle. “Why, if it isn’t Rosie, my old friend?” Mavis said happily. Then she heard another sound, and gasped. Rosie, Stanley, and Philip pulled into the Yard and stopped next to the Class 04. “Hello Mavis!” Rosie said to Mavis. “Why are you all here?” Mavis asked. “The Fat Controller asked us to come help you out, once Thomas, Percy, and Toby come home.” Stanley explained. Just then, the Fat Controller arrived.
“Hello everyone. Thank you Rosie, and Stanley, and Philip for coming.” The three engines greeted him in kind. “Now,” the Fat Controller began, “As you are all perfectly aware, Thomas, Percy, and Toby, are not here. In fact, they’re at the Steamworks. In their absence, you three shall take over their jobs. Rosie will cover Thomas’ passenger and goods trains, Stanley will take over for Percy, and little Philip…” “Ooh! Ooh! Ooh! Do I get to do Toby’s jobs?!” Philip asked excitedly. “I am sorry Phil, but you will take over for Mavis at Anopha Quarry. I’m sure she can teach you everything you need to know about how the Quarry runs.” “Okay sir.” Philip said unhappily. He had already gotten on well with Henrietta, Victoria, and Elsie whenever Toby stayed the night at Knapford. He really wanted to do Toby’s jobs so he could get the chance to work with them. “This means that Mavis, under contract from the Ffarquhar Quarry Company, will be taking over for Toby’s jobs on his tramway!”
Mavis was surprised! “Oh Sir, thank you! I won’t let you down!” “I know you won’t,” said the Fat Controller kindly, “Now off you go, show Philip the ropes.” On my way, sir. Come along Philip!” “Coming.” With that, Mavis and Philip left for Anopha. “Is it just me sir, or did Philip look a little upset to you?” Stanley asked. The Fat Controller pondered for a moment, and turned towards the remaining engines. “The reason I put Philip in charge of the Quarry is to see if he can gain more experience shunting trucks in an environment where anything could possibly happen and he’d learn from those things. Mavis, while I know hasn’t been out of the Quarry since her accident with the chute and Den had to take over, needs more to do than shunt trucks ‘round the Quarry and either her, Toby, or Percy lug them down here to Ffarquhar. So I’ve given them a “change in pace” if you know what I mean?” Rosie and Stanley understood, and set to work.
“...And over here is where you shunt the trucks that have been loaded.” Mavis explained. Philip was listening, but not hard enough, he was thinking about why the Fat Controller didn’t give Toby’s jobs to him. “That’s about everything, now I must be going. Just remember Philip, take care, and when there’s a problem, go find the Foreman and he’ll take care of it.” Mavis instructed. “Okay Mavis.” Philip replied. “Goodbye Philip! Do a good job!” Called Mavis as she left.
Philip watched as Mavis rounded the bend at the exit of the Quarry. He noticed that after an engine approached the bend, they dipped downwards at an angle. This gave him an idea.
The next day, Philip started work. He approached a line of empty trucks, waiting to be filled. The trucks were used to Mavis, and had only seen Philip on a few occasions at Knapford, so they knew that Philip didn’t know a thing about them, which meant they were going to have lots of with this little boxcab. Unknown to them, Philip had some tricks of his own.
Philip rolled up to the trucks. “Okay trucks, time to get loaded.” “But we don’t want to!” One of the trucks cried. “We’re comfortable with where we are!” Yelled another. Philip thought for a moment. “Alright then, I guess I’ll get another rake of trucks. Besides, I heard from Mavis that you lot are the laziest trucks in this Quarry.” This was, of course, not entirely true, but the trucks didn’t know that. “What?!” Shouted Truck #1. “We’re hard workers! Right #!1?” Truck #2 asked. “Yeah we are! Come on boys, let’s get to work!” Truck #1 exclaimed. The rest of the trucks cheered, while Philip giggled to himself.
A couple hours later, Philip had arranged a full train of stone, and put them in the sidings. There! That’s done! Now I’ve got a few hours until some more empties arrive! Philip thought to himself. Then, Philip had a cheeky idea. I wonder if Stanley would mind if I put the trucks near the hill so he can be ready to brake. This was a terrible idea, but Philip didn’t know better. We all know he barely listened Mavis’ instructions. Don’t we?
Anyways, Philip buffered up to the trucks, startling them. “Eh? What’s going on?” Truck #1 asked. “I don’t know. Stanley must have arrived already.” Truck #2 replied. Truck #1 noticed that the engine that had buffered up to them was Philip. “What do you want?” Truck #1 asked. “I’m just shunting you guys to the front of the yard. I want to make sure you guys get out of here as quickly as possible.” Philip explained. Truck #1 spluttered. “You’re doing what?!” “Come along. Come along. We don’t have all day!” Philip ordered. This was the final straw. “Alright boys! You know what to do!” Truck #1 whispered to the others. The trucks giggled as Philip arrived at the front of the yard. “Okay everyone! I’m going to stop now!” Philip said just as they approached the bend. “Oh no you don’t!” The trucks shouted. “On! On! ON!” “Oh no!” Philip cried, as the rounded the bend and began down the slope, and onto the branchline…
“And so I says to Arthur, ‘I’ll shunt those trucks as soon as I’ve finished letting those surfers use me as a surfboard to ride the railway lines!’” Rosie finished her story. Stanley, Annie, and Clarabel chuckled. “Oh Rosie, you never cease to amaze!” Stanley laughed. “Yes, now it’s time to get going!” Said Annie. “Yes, or we’ll be late for our connection!” Clarabel agreed. “Okay!” said Rosie.
Just as she was backing onto the two coaches, Stanley thought he could hear something. “Rosie? Do you hear something?” “What is it Stanley?” Rosie asked. “I don’t know, but it sounds like a…” “RUNAWAY TRAIN!!!!” Philip shouted. “That’s it!” Stanley exclaimed, then noticed that he was correct. Philip raced through the yards and past the yard entrance. “Oh my god! Oh my god! Oh my god!” Philip cried, and saw that the line ended at a buffer stop. “STOP! STOP!” Philip shouted. But it was too late as he smashed through the buffers and onto the ground, with the trucks piling up behind him.
“Ooooohhhh….” Philip groaned. Stanley and Rosie rushed over to their friend. “Well Philip, you could’ve waited for me to come get the trucks instead of bringing them here.” Stanley joked. Rosie glared daggers at Stanley, who immediately went quiet. “Aside from that, are you alright?” Rosie asked. “I will be, as long as the Fat Controller doesn’t find out.” Philip replied. “Oh I’m sure he’ll find out about it eventually.” Said a voice. Philip gulped.
As Philip was being taken away on a lowloader by Stanley, who was apologizing to Philip profusely, the Fat Controller turned to talk to Mavis. “Mavis! I thought you told me you gave Philip very explicit instructions for how to run the Quarry!” Boomed the Fat Controller. “I did sir! I told him everything! I even explained to him that if he had a problem, he should go the Foreman for instructions!” Mavis tried to explain. After hearing that, the Fat Controller turned, and walked to his car. As he was climbing in, he wondered if it was a better option just to close passenger and goods services on the Branchline and wait until Thomas, Percy and Toby came back from repairs. I might as well consider it. He thought as he drove away from the scene.
