When Daisy came to Thomas' Branch Line, Toby was relocated to Knapford Sheds along with Henriatta. After the branch line was closed, Toby was due to move to Tidmouth. But Toby insisted at staying at Knapford claiming that Tidmouth was too noisy. The Fat Controller allowed it as long as Toby kept the time on getting the workmen. Now Toby's duties were to take workmen to and from the Big Harbour. He picked them up every morning from the Big Station. Usually Toby was on time, but one morning he had trouble starting and the workmen were late. The Fat Controller warned Toby that if he's late again, he'll have to move to Tidmouth. Toby felt worried and told Henriatta that besides her, Knapford Sheds are the only left from their old lifestyle and he wants to hold onto it. Henriatta understood.

Toby and Ben
Besides taking workmen to and from the harbor, Toby also helps out with the shunting there. He wasn't the only one though, Ben was there too. After Edward's Branch Line was closed down, the China Clay Workings sold off Bill and Ben. Ben was sold to the Fat Controller's Railway and Bill was sold elsewhere. Ben was also the new No.8. Even though the twins were separated, they still had a cheeky frame of mind. As such Ben often teased and played tricks on Toby. Try as he might Toby couldn't keep Ben in order like Edward and BoCo had done. This went on until a storm struck the Island. Wind and rain went everywhere. Toby and Ben had to help clear the harbor. They had almost finished when waves from the sea knocked out Ben's fire. He was unable to move. Toby rescues Ben and they got to Tidmouth safely. Ben was very grateful and vows never to be cheeky towards Toby again.

One night Ben spent the night in Knapford Sheds with Toby. Since he rescued Ben during the storm, Ben was eager to know more about Toby. Toby told Ben how he used to work at a harbor before being given his own tramline. He singlehandedly ran the line before it closed taking Henriatta and nine loaded trucks. Ben thought Toby was amazing. Toby brushes this off and told Ben about one of his brothers, No.7131. No.7131 worked on a different tramway and he was used mainly on goods duties. They were especially busy during harvest time. The engines were often overworked. But No.7131 still was determined. One day forty eight trucks of four hundred tons of fruit needed to be delivered. No.7131 decided to take them all forgetting about his small watertank. He did well until near Elm Bridge, he was short of water. No.7131 backed his train into a siding and went to fill up at Wisbech. He then came back and delivered the trucks. No.7131 was praised for not letting the tramway down. Ben was loss for words.

Other than Henriatta, Toby also has a luggage van named Elsie. She often carries passengers luggage. When Thomas' Branch Line was open, Thomas sometimes took her along with Annie and Clarabel at busy times since Annie could only carry passengers. Now that Toby worked at the harbor, there were a lot more people and a lot more luggage. Elsie was more full than ever before. While people saw her simply as a truck, Ben saw her as being unique like Toby. One day Toby's driver was late getting up and Toby had to rush to get the workmen. He had got to the Big Station on time, but he had left Elsie behind and there were a lot of workmen with a lot of luggage. Ben offers to go and get Elsie. So the workmen left their luggage at the station while Toby takes them to the harbor. Ben collects Elsie from the sheds, collects the luggage from the Big Station and takes to the harbor. This saved a lot of time and Ben was praised for his clever and quick actions. Elsie took a liking to Ben and asked him and Toby if she could be Ben's luggage van from now on. Both engines agreed. Now Ben lives at Knapford Sheds with Toby. Toby takes the workmen and Ben takes the luggage.

Three years before the Fat Controller closed down Thomas and Edward's Branch Lines, it was first announced that the railway wasn't doing well and he may have to shut down the branch lines to ensure the North Western's survival. Although they understood, Duck and Oliver were appalled at the idea of their branch line being closed down. Several local residents felt this way too. They recently got the branch line back after losing it several years ago when the Mid Sodor Railway closed down. Now they just might lose it again due to hard times. No one knew what to do. Douglas who had to take some trucks to the Works Station decided to talk to the Thin Controller's engines about the problem. Skarloey and Rheneas tell him how their line was almost closed until a preservation society was formed to save it and the line remained open ever since. Douglas then told Duck and Oliver on how they could save their branch line.

Duck and Oliver told the Fat Controller about the idea of preserving their branch line. The Fat Controller stated that he couldn't do anything himself at present, but he spoke to a few people at Swindon Works. They told him about the Dart Valley Railway. Some people who helped to preserve that line came to Sodor. Several meetings were then held at Arlesburgh. A group of people came to see Duck and Oliver at the sheds. They told the engines that their line is going to be saved by the newly formed Little Western Society.

Duck and Oliver were grateful. The Little Western Society had been formed to save their branch line. Now they had to come up with ideas either to buy the line or come to an agreement. Since there was a lack of funds at present, it was decided to do the latter. The society met with the Fat Controller who agreed to loan the branch line to them for two years. In that time, the society either had to keep renewing the loan or buy the Little Western. Either way Duck and Oliver were determined to do whatever it took to save their branch line.

Two years have passed since the Little Western was put in care of the Little Western Society. During that time, a number of things were done to raise funds. Documentaries were filmed, dining trains were pulled, cab rides were given. However it still wasn't enough and time was running out. Duck and Oliver deducted that if they were going to save the line, they could just rely on local residents, they needed help from the rest of the Island. So the word was spread and a fundraiser was started on railways across the region of Sodor. Before long the loan was up and the fate of the branch line was decided. Duck, Oliver, James, Douglas and the society all at Arlesburgh. There an announcment was made. The Fat Controller has sold part of his railway that now belongs to the New Railway. As for the branch lines, Thomas' Branch Line has been closed down, Edward's Branch Line has been closed down and the Little Western by an inch has been saved. Everyone cheered. The branch line is now a railway called the Little Western Railway. The society now owns it along with Duck, Oliver and the rolling stock on the line. James and Douglas take turns helping out from time to time. Duck and Oliver were just happy that their branch line has been saved.

Even though time has passed, Douglas was still grieving over losing Donald. It had happened three years ago before everything changed on the Fat Controller's Railway. That night Donald had to take a midnight goods train to Barrow. After delivering his trucks, Donald headed light engine back to Tidmouth. He went well until he got to the viaduct. As Donald crossed it, it began to quiver and crumble. Donald tried to hurry to the other side, but that only made things worse. Donald warned his driver and fireman to get out of him quick. As they did so, stones and ballast fell. The rails sagged and broke. Donald fell through the arch slamming against the walls of the bridge as he went down. He landed at the bottom with a thud. More debris continue to fall. The driver and fireman got to safer grounds and managed to reach the nearest signalbox. There the accident was reported. Donald was recovered, but he was damaged beyond repairs. And with the Fat Controller's crisis going on, he couldn't fix Donald. So Donald of what remained of him was taken to the scrapyard and broken up. The Main Line was closed while the viaduct was being repaired. This gave the engines time to properly mourn the loss of Donald. When the viaduct was fully mended it was renamed Donald Viaduct and even carries a nameplate in the former engines' memory.

The reason the accident has happened because the arches were weak and fell under maintenance. The Fat Controller felt very bad and wanted to make it up to Douglas for his failure, but he didn't know how. On the outside, Douglas pretended to be okay. On the inside he kept thinking about when he and Donald first came to Sodor. Donald was bought, but Douglas wasn't and knew he'd be scrapped if he had stayed in Scotland. As such Donald didn't let that happen, so they planned Douglas' escape and came to Sodor together. Douglas thinks its ironic now, if things had went as is he would've been scrapped and Donald would still be running. Instead the opposite happened and now Douglas concludes that he's a former twin engine.

To cheer the engines up about the changes on the railway, the Fat Controller decided to give them new coats of paint. James who now works with Douglas thinks that a new coat of paint will cheer him up. He tells Douglas how happy he felt when he first got his red coat. Douglas then remarks how it got to his smokebox as well. He then asks James why does he like being red so much. James replies that most engines on the Fat Controller's Railway are blue or green, with exceptions like Toby and Mavis. Being red helps him to stand out and not be another face in the crowd. This is why he was so upset once when the Fat Controller threatened to paint him blue. James adds also people might confuse him with Edward, like they did with Gordon and Henry when Henry was painted blue at the time. While he didn't think the colour was glamourous, James thought Donald and Douglas really stood out when they were painted black. He asked Douglas why blue. Douglas states that he and Donald were black when built, while their siblings were all blue. When the Fat Controller gave them new coats of paint, they chose blue to remind them of their siblings and Scotland. James replies that he gets it, engines all have their reasons for the colours they are. James and later Douglas were repainted. James came out in his usual red coat. Douglas on the other hand chose to be repainted red coat. James and the other engines were surprised. Douglas says to James while he agreed about his statement about standing out, that not the reason why he did it. He did it to remind himself that while Donald is now gone, he wouldn't want his twin to be sad and having a new coat of paint is a start to feeling happy. Douglas then asks James what does he think about there being two red tender engines on the Fat Controller's Railway. James says he thinks Douglas made a good and wise choice. Now they could both be splendid together.

Initially when I wrote this story, I intended to give Douglas back his black livery. However I did a typo when writing out the story and accidentally said Douglas was getting a red coat. Then a person commented on the change and how it could help Douglas heal from losing Donald. Because of that and to help distinguish him from his original Tv series and RWS counterparts, I decided to keep Douglas red and rewrote the story.

A Special Surprise
Even though he now a new coat of paint and a new found bond with James, Douglas was still miserable. The Fat Controller gave Douglas new paint and special jobs, but they've done no good. He was officially out of ideas. James thought something else maybe going on and asked Douglas about it. Douglas states that besides losing Donald, steam has been abolished on the Other Railway. All if not most of his siblings are gone and he's the lone survivor. Douglas then sadly went to sleep. James however stay up thinking on how he could cheer Douglas up. At last he had a good idea and spoke to the Fat Controller about it the next morning. The Fat Controller thought it was a great idea. The arrangements took time, but one day after Douglas had finished his work he went back to the sheds. There he saw a blue engine with the same shape as him. Douglas recognized the engine as No.828, one of his older brothers from Scotland. Douglas thanked the Fat Controller who told him that he should thank James as it was his idea. James modestly says he remembered Gordon and Flying Scotsman and thought about Douglas. Douglas and No.828 were photographed together. No.828 told Douglas about his new home in Aviemore, Scotland. Douglas was now much happier. He still misses Donald, but is glad to have a brother still with him. And thanks to all that he did, the friendship between Douglas and James was much stronger.

Due to the crisis on the Fat Controller's Railway, part of it had to be sold. This formed a new company nicknamed the New Railway, with a new controller and some new engines (as well as some old friends). You can read all about it here.

After part of the Fat Controller was sold, the New Railway is formed. It runs from Peel Godred to Vicarstown. Now that the New Controller owns the remainder of the railway, he decided to electrify the remainder of it all the way to Vicarstown. He had to do Vicarstown, because Barrow has not yet electrified. As such trains now terminate here. The electrification was done because the New Controller felt electric trains are more modern and efficient than steam and diesel engines, but he keeps diesels around as a back up just in case.

Daisy's New Line
Even though most of the New Railway is ran by electric traction, there's a branch line that is operated by diesel. This is the Kirkronan Branch, its's a small branch line that runs from the Main Line to a small port. This line was given to Daisy who handles most of the passenger duties. A small diesel named Clarence helps out with the freight duties. They run the line together, but Daisy considers herself the pride of the line. One day Clarence was ill and Daisy had to do his work as well as her own. This involved delivering fish vans. Daisy didn't want to do this, but she remembered how she almost got sent away from the Fat Controller's Railway for being lazy. So she put her pride aside and delivered her job. After she delivered the fish, Daisy prepared for her return journey to Kirkronan. As she did so, the passengers complained about her smelling like fish. At the end of the line when her driver looked her over, it turns out that one of the fish fell into her windows when it was being loaded and went under her seat. Daisy was cleaned out and hoped she'd never have to see another fish again.
MrMilkDuctor: Mine Is Lady her paint job looks really nice she didn’t really have many appearances but she looked cute .

Nicholas: There's a lot of focus on female characters being 'cute' or beautiful going hand in hand with how good a character they are. Curious perceptions of what validates popularity and favourability for females, to me! There are many other traits to appreciate.
Oct 23, 2021 13:46:21 GMT
Inkwright: If only Lady had appeared more! Also, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks Ashima is something just pure.
Oct 23, 2021 14:27:50 GMT
The Thomas Cynic: Absolutely agreed, Nicholas. People get mad at writers (I'm mostly talking outside of Thomas here lol) when they make girls too stereotypically feminine, and they also get mad when they try and make them a stereotypically "strong" female character.
Oct 23, 2021 19:37:06 GMT
whosgeoffrey: I think that there's a general feeling in TV and film writing today that it one writes a female character (or a character in any other minority) that is intended to have major character flaws or is supposed to be disliked, then the audience is sexist — 1/2
Oct 25, 2021 15:23:51 GMT
whosgeoffrey: — or racist or homophobic or bigoted in some other way for disliking said character. I think Thomas and BWBA especially are extreme examples of this — the writers didn't want to write harmful characters but swung so violently in the other direction — 2/?
Oct 25, 2021 15:26:59 GMT
whosgeoffrey: — that the female characters are flat and uninteresting. Personally I am of the opinion that representation of oppressed minorities on TV can not be truly authentic unless said minorities can be any sort of character: hero or villain or neither.

OJ: Rebecca had a goof law to begin with but it felt like it got suddenly taken away. Daisy has always been an entertaining character and so has Marion.

Inkwright: The first Thomas episode I ever saw in my life will be 30 years old on Friday...Man, do I love Trust Thomas

wildnorwester: The series really has been going for a while, hasn't it?
Oct 25, 2021 19:38:07 GMT
Inkwright: Yes indeed. I'm glad this series is living in my heart stronger than ever this year, and Trust Thomas is a contributing factor to that.
Oct 25, 2021 19:40:46 GMT
Madness: A goof law? What do you mean by that OJ?
Oct 26, 2021 0:09:27 GMT
Inkwright: I bet he means that she started with a typical clumsy trope.
Oct 26, 2021 0:50:39 GMT
The Thomas Cynic: Even the goof law doesn't even count a character flaw for me, rather it's a character imperfection. A character flaw is something that makes the character less perfect, and if someone IRL said that being clumsy makes you less perfect, they'd be clobbered.
Oct 26, 2021 5:37:45 GMT
Inkwright: Good point. What I do believe is that Rebecca could've potentially had more grounded character flaws, yet Mattel didn't see the bigger picture. So in the end, the character was never meant to be perfect which all adds to her purpose within the franchise.
Oct 26, 2021 14:05:33 GMT
OJ: Sorry typo I meant a good flaw. I'd rather Rebecca was the worrywart than Henry. I like to think Henry would go back to his original personality eventually.
Oct 26, 2021 15:04:23 GMT
The Thomas Cynic: Well now I look like an idiot lol. Ima just make "goof law" a term now.
Oct 26, 2021 15:59:16 GMT
Inkwright: Lol imagine that being used on your YouTube channel.
