BoBo and Machan are two electric engines who did mixed traffic duties. When their line was a branch line, they handled both the passenger and freight duties. After their branch became apart of the New Railway, the New Controller decided that they wouldn't be enough to handle all of the work across the Main Line. So he bought two electric multiple units named Abbey and Amanda. They would handle the passenger duties, while BoBo and Machan handled the goods duties. Amanda was sensible, but Abbey was cocky. She believes the New Controller bought her because multiple units are more efficient than trains pulled by engines. One day, Abbey was taking a train to Vicarstown. She was going well until, she broke down near Kellshorpe. BoCo helped her finish the journey and then took her to the Works. BoBo took her next train. For a few days, Abbey kept her remarks to herself.

The Works Engines
Clarence has two brothers named Crovan and Clive. Crovan and Clive live and work at the Works. They were proud of this because now they could stay individuals from their triplet brother. This is also why the diesel triplets have different coats. Crovan mostly handles the maintenance duties around the New Railway. Clive is based at the Works. Clive wanted to come out of the yard and more experience. His chance came when Crovan fell ill. BoCo did most of his duties, but Clive was told to do one job. Take scrap from the Works to the scrapyard. This should have been an easy job, however Clive wasn't as experienced at pulling trucks as Crovan and BoCo were. The trucks gave Clive trouble on the way to the scrapyard. At last Clive lost patience and biffed a truck hard. However the truck was old and fell into pieces. It took a while to clear up the mess. Although he got scolded at by the New Controller, the trucks respected Clive a lot more out of fear of being taken apart and never gave him trouble again.

With the exception of Daisy's line, electric traction did most of the main jobs, whilst diesels did the secondary and works duties. Everyone had a special function. Then one day the catenary needed some repairs. This meant BoBo, Machan, Abbey and Amanda couldn't pull any trains. BoCo and the diesel triplets were put in charge of the main jobs. BoCo was going to be on passenger duties and the diesel triplets were on goods duties. Gordon and Bear were also going help out. Gordon was going to pull the New Express and Bear was going to do hourly direct passenger trains between the Fat Controller's Railway and the New Railway. Everything worked out and when things were back to normal again, the New Controller called a meeting at Killdane. He says that electric traction is modern, but having both electric and non electric traction is more efficient. Both the electric and diesel engines agreed. The New Controller finishes by saying they are all apart of the New Railway.

The New Railway was formed in 1973, following the sale of part of the North Western Railway. The idea came about as what if the remainder of the railway was electrified. I combined that idea along with the crisis on the Fat Controller's Railway and as a result, there are now two main standard gauge railways on Sodor. One solely electrified and one non electrified. I'm still trying to figure out a proper name for the New Railway. If you have any ideas, let me know.

You are familiar with the Small Railway, right? The minimum gauge railway near the Little Western. Well if so, then what you probably didn't know was that there is one other minimum gauge railway on Sodor before the aforementioned. Turn the page and find out about it.

In the north of Sodor, there is a railway ran by four minimum gauge engines. Their names were Gudrun, Guvnor, Gerda and Gleih. Their railway was called the North Sodor Railway. The engines were unusual. They were actually diesels, but looked like steam engines. They were steam outline diesels. The other engines on the Island knew little about this until one day when Gudrun needed some repairs. This happened before everything changed on the Fat Controller's Railway and when Toby was new to the railway. Percy was sent to collect her and take her to the Works. Gudrun told Percy all about the North Sodor Railway and the engines who ran it. At the end of the journey, Percy was impressed.

Gudrun or Guvnor
While at the Works, Gudrun met Gordon who was being repainted. Gordon remarks he's glad that Henry chose to be green again. This way people wouldn't mix them up like before. Gudrun replies that she had a similar incident on her railway and told Gordon her story. Before coming to the North Sodor Railway, Gudrun and the other engines worked at an amusement park. At that time, the engines had no names or numbers. Gudrun and Guvnor looked alike and were both painted green. After being bought by the North Sodor Railway, the engines were given names and numbers. Gudrun was No.1, Guvnor No.2, Gerda No.3 and Gleih No.4. Despite this people still kept mixing up Gudrun and Guvnor. This nearly caused a collision head on at Cregwir. A signalman was told to set the points for Guvnor and Gudrun was to wait until Guvnor passed. However he mistook Gudrun for Guvnor and let her go instead just as Gunvor was approaching. Thankfully Gudrun reversed allowing Guvnor time to stop. After this, the manager decided to repainted either Gudrun or Guvnor. Gudrun volunteered and chose to be repainted black, thus ending the confusion.

On the Road
The North Sodor Railway has no rail connections. So anytime the engines were being sent away from the railway, they had to be transported by road. After her repairs, Gordon took Gudrun on a flatbed down the line as far as Cronk. From there, she was to be taken to Ballaswein by road. Unlike most engines, Gudrun doesn't mind being transported by road. She thinks its a nice change from the rails and you get to see things from a different point of view. Gudrun had a surprise going back. Instead of a lorry, Trevor the Traction Engine was taking her. Trevor explained Gudrun that he was a steam engine who ran on roads instead of rails. Gudrun told Trevor about how she was a diesel who looked like a steam engine. Gudrun told Trevor about the other similar engines on her railway. Trevor told her about George the Steamroller. They chatted all the way about unusual engines and laughed a lot. At the end of the journey, Gudrun was unloaded and Trevor headed back home. He whistled goodbye as he went. Both engines hoped to see each other again.

Gudrun Comes Home
While Gudrun was away being mended, the other engines did all of the work. Gerda and Gleih didn't mind the extra, Guvnor complained about it constantly. Because of her small size, Gerda was the primarily used on maintenance duties. One day Gerda was ill, so Guvnor and Gleih had to do her work as well as their own. Much to everyone's surprise, Guvnor wasn't sulky. Instead Guvnor thought it was her opportunity to show everyone that she was the pride of line. Guvnor and Gleih worked very hard. There were few trains, but the passengers knew that Guvnor and Gleih were trying their best. Next day Gerda felt better and Gudrun returned. The four North Sodor Engines were glad to be together again at last.

I based the North Sodor Railway on the North Bay Railway. I decided to play the abandoned narrow gauge line in Ballaswein and based it on what if the line was reopened as a tourist line. As for the engines, although they bear resemblance to certain North Bay Engines, their storylines aren't meant to be so similar their real life counterparts. In order to better separate them from the Small Railway Engines as well as add some diversity, I decided to make all of the engines female and give them all G names.

Bill and Ben have worked at the China Clay Pits for most of their lives and couldn't imagine working anywhere else. Then when the Fat Controller closed down Edward's Branch Line, the China Clay Company saw no further use for Bill and Ben. They considered buying out the line from the Fat Controller, but this would just be another expense. The line was going to be pulled up, turned into a road and lorries would then take over work. As for Bill and Ben, they were going to be sold. The Fat Controller had considered buying them both, but couldn't at present. So he bought Ben and negotiated with the Sodor Aluminium Company who had agreed to buy Bill. The twins were appalled at being separated, but understood why it had to be done. They played one last trick on BoCo by hiding his train. BoCo knew where the trucks were, but played along for the twins' amusement. On their last day, they took a train of china clay to Edward's Station. To their surprise a group of enthusiasts were there. This was arranged since everyone knew how much Bill and Ben loved being photographed. Afterwards the twins went their separate ways towards their new lives.

Bill's New Job
After being sold to the Sodor Aluminium Company, a few changes were made to Bill. He kept his number and yellow coat of paint. However he was given a larger cab, the Brendam Bay above his smokebox was taken away and the Sodor China Clay lettering was replaced with the Sodor Aluminium Company one. Bill's new job was to shunt trucks at the Aluminium Works. The Aluminium Works was on the New Railway, which only had diesel and electric engines. Bill was the only steam engine on the line and this made him feel lonely. BoBo and Machan, two of the electric engines who took turns to do the work at the Aluminium Works had showed Bill what to do. Bill took to his new duties quite well, but he still felt miserable. Bill tried to feel like himself by playing tricks on the other engines, however this only got him into trouble and it didn't feel the same without Ben. One day BoBo offered to swap duties with Bill for the day. It was agreed upon and Bill was allowed to take a train of aluminium as far as Killdane. From there BoCo would take his trains down the rest of the line. Seeing BoCo made Bill glad that a familiar face was still him. Also getting a chance to stretch his wheels made him feel a little better, but he still wondered what Ben was up to.

Ben and Douglas
On the Fat Controller's Railway, Ben was put to work shunting at the harbor near the Big Station. He worked there alongside Toby. Like Bill, Ben also had some changes made to him. He also kept his yellow coat of paint, but now carried the number 8, no longer had Brendam Bay above his smokebox, and the Sodor China Clay lettering was replaced with the North Western Railway one. Ben managed to make friends with Toby and Elsie (the latter whom became his van). But he still longed to be with his twin Bill. One night Ben spent the night at the shed near the Big Station. Douglas was also there. When Edward's Branch Line was opened, Donald and Douglas sometimes helped out and often met up with Bill and Ben. The China Clay Twins thought the Scottish Twins were fusspots. However when Ben saw Douglas that night, he felt him to be the only engine who could understand him. Ben asked Douglas how does he feel after losing Donald. Douglas replies he felt that he lost apart of himself as well as his best friend. He gets through it day by day and having friends like James helps as well. Ben asked is that Douglas is now red. Douglas confirmed it was. He tells Ben that Donald is still with him deep down, just like Bill is still with Ben. Douglas also says that Ben still has Bill, he's just on another part of the Island being useful. He is probably thinking of Ben as they speak. Ben went to sleep with a lot to think about.

Next day, Douglas spoke to the Fat Controller. The Fat Controller spoke to the New Controller who spoke to the owner of the Sodor Aluminium Company. Then the New Controller went to see Clive and told him that needs to go help out at the Aluminium Works for a while. Clive thought this was a nice change. When he got there Bill taught Clive everything he knew. Afterwards Bill went to the Fat Controller's Railway. At the harbour, Toby and Ben were very busy shunting trucks. They had just rested a while when Bill steamed in. The twins were very happy to see each other. They spent the rest of the day bustling and bumping trucks. And even though they don't entirely look alike anymore, they still managed to trick the other engines. They enjoyed their reunion and were still happy even when Bill went back home a few days later. Clive did such a good job that now he occasionally helps Bill out at the Aluminium Works and the two became good friends. After finding out what Douglas did, Ben became good friends with him as well as Toby and Elsie. The twins now knew that even they were apart, they will always be together in each other.

Twin characters are intriguing. Especially identical ones that have the same personality. They are good for number of things because of that strong sibling bond you don't get with normal siblings. It could also make good character development when they are separated. This is one of the reasons why I decided to kill off Donald as well as separate Bill and Ben. I wanted them to give them challenges that they didn't have in the RWS and the Tv series. Also in real life Judy and Albert, Bill and Ben's real life basis were separated for a period of time before being reunited. As Bill and Ben will be now. They will come back together again in later books, however I want to explore them more as individual characters.

Steam engines are no longer safe on the Other Railway. Unless of course they are bought by a preservation society or escape to the Fat Controller's Railway on Sodor. Speaking of which one engine did recently escape to Sodor. You can read all about the engine in the following chapters.
MrMilkDuctor: Mine Is Lady her paint job looks really nice she didn’t really have many appearances but she looked cute .
Oct 23, 2021 7:56:40 GMT
Nicholas: There's a lot of focus on female characters being 'cute' or beautiful going hand in hand with how good a character they are. Curious perceptions of what validates popularity and favourability for females, to me! There are many other traits to appreciate.
Oct 23, 2021 13:46:21 GMT
Inkwright: If only Lady had appeared more! Also, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks Ashima is something just pure.
Oct 23, 2021 14:27:50 GMT
The Thomas Cynic: Absolutely agreed, Nicholas. People get mad at writers (I'm mostly talking outside of Thomas here lol) when they make girls too stereotypically feminine, and they also get mad when they try and make them a stereotypically "strong" female character.
Oct 23, 2021 19:37:06 GMT
whosgeoffrey: I think that there's a general feeling in TV and film writing today that it one writes a female character (or a character in any other minority) that is intended to have major character flaws or is supposed to be disliked, then the audience is sexist — 1/2
Oct 25, 2021 15:23:51 GMT
whosgeoffrey: — or racist or homophobic or bigoted in some other way for disliking said character. I think Thomas and BWBA especially are extreme examples of this — the writers didn't want to write harmful characters but swung so violently in the other direction — 2/?
Oct 25, 2021 15:26:59 GMT
whosgeoffrey: — that the female characters are flat and uninteresting. Personally I am of the opinion that representation of oppressed minorities on TV can not be truly authentic unless said minorities can be any sort of character: hero or villain or neither.

OJ: Rebecca had a goof law to begin with but it felt like it got suddenly taken away. Daisy has always been an entertaining character and so has Marion.
Oct 25, 2021 18:04:43 GMT
Inkwright: The first Thomas episode I ever saw in my life will be 30 years old on Friday...Man, do I love Trust Thomas
Oct 25, 2021 18:19:23 GMT
wildnorwester: The series really has been going for a while, hasn't it?
Oct 25, 2021 19:38:07 GMT
Inkwright: Yes indeed. I'm glad this series is living in my heart stronger than ever this year, and Trust Thomas is a contributing factor to that.
Oct 25, 2021 19:40:46 GMT
Madness: A goof law? What do you mean by that OJ?
Oct 26, 2021 0:09:27 GMT
Inkwright: I bet he means that she started with a typical clumsy trope.
Oct 26, 2021 0:50:39 GMT
The Thomas Cynic: Even the goof law doesn't even count a character flaw for me, rather it's a character imperfection. A character flaw is something that makes the character less perfect, and if someone IRL said that being clumsy makes you less perfect, they'd be clobbered.
Oct 26, 2021 5:37:45 GMT
Inkwright: Good point. What I do believe is that Rebecca could've potentially had more grounded character flaws, yet Mattel didn't see the bigger picture. So in the end, the character was never meant to be perfect which all adds to her purpose within the franchise.
Oct 26, 2021 14:05:33 GMT
OJ: Sorry typo I meant a good flaw. I'd rather Rebecca was the worrywart than Henry. I like to think Henry would go back to his original personality eventually.
Oct 26, 2021 15:04:23 GMT
The Thomas Cynic: Well now I look like an idiot lol. Ima just make "goof law" a term now.
Oct 26, 2021 15:59:16 GMT
Inkwright: Lol imagine that being used on your YouTube channel.

WaltWiz1901: Re: "Trust Thomas" turning 30 on the 29th: the episode (as well as seven other S3 episodes) actually made its world premiere on UK home video on November 11th

Inkwright: Huh, Wikipedia said the 29th is the TV air date
