Once there was an engine who worked in a shunting yard and occasionally pulled goods trains. She was a tank engine named Elizabeth. She is often called Liz or Eliza for short, but she prefers Liz. Liz worked at a big station on the Other Railway. She worked very hard and was often praised by her managers. They called her the star shunter. Liz thought that this would last forever. However modernisation took place on the Other Railway. One by one Liz's brothers and sisters were taken out of service and replaced by diesels. Soon Liz was the only one of her kind still left in service. Her manager only kept her around to save money on getting another engine, but called Liz his star shunter to humble her. This manager later retired and a new manager took his place. The new manager had no interest in keeping steam engines. One afternoon Liz was resting when her driver and fireman came up. They told her that today was their last day with her. The manager was going to send Liz for scrap and replace her with a diesel shunter. The driver and fireman tried to argue on Liz's behalf, but the manager believes that diesels are more efficient. Liz couldn't believe it. She had been the star shunter for years and now she was going to join the other steam engines in the cutter's torch. Liz sadly went back to work and had trouble sleeping that night. She had just managed to get to sleep when her driver and fireman woke her with a start. They told her that she doesn't have to worry about being scrapped because they were going to help her escape.
