Dear Reader, a railway on the mainland, the Saltburn Miniature Railway, approached the DHAP to build them an engine just like Prince Charles but with the diesel hydraulic technology as they are in need of another engine. So Mr. Yeoman and his team built the locomotive, and after 3 months of construction the engine was ready to be tested on the Arlesdale Railway, and just in time as let’s say Ivan got into a bit of trouble with a young lady thanks to a squeak he had developed, but i shan't say to no more as to not spoil the book
Story Stops: 1. Ivans Squeak 2. Princess Gundrun 3. Horse's 4. Farewell My Mike
Ivan was kept hard pressed on his dutys as the summer season had arrived, meaning he was extra busy with the goods traffic. However he was starting to get very exhausted indeed, even with his immense strength, culminating in a very peculiar squeak he had started to develop in the first week of the summer. This of course would lead to him getting teased by Mike and Jock one night at the sheds, “People would think a bunch of mice would be in the area with your squeaking.” said Mike “Indeed, or they’d mistake you for a sponge washing silverware” added Jock. “I can’t help this” started Ivan dully “Although it might be due to my increased workload, but it’s only happening now which is of concern.” Mike and Jock ignored this and continued to tease him until Bert and Rex shushed them and they fell asleep.
The next day Ivans squeak started when he was rolling out of the sheds. “This should not be happening, it was only happening when I was at pace doing my jobs and applying my breaks.” However he had work to do, so he set out with the only concern of his squeak for him was being kept up late by Mike and Jocks teasing. Unfortunately for him the trucks got very annoyed of his squeak, at first it was simple annoyance, then a mass amount of groaning and complaining every time Ivan took them, and then the trucks started to cause all sorts of trouble for Ivan, holding him back, pushing him onward to attempt to crash him, and trying to snap the couplings to break away. Luckily Ivan was able to prevent their tricks as he is a very strong engine; however one day this would change.
One morning Ivan awoke as usual, today his driver was sick so a relief driver was called in. She was a new driver and had just passed the tests needed to be a relief driver, and thus whilst knowing the basics of railway knowledge needed, was very inexperienced and did not know how to treat engines properly in terms of listening to them. She started up Ivan and began to make him move, but the Ivan started to feel some pain in his axels “My Axels ache, we should have a look at it before we go to work.” However the relief driver, wanting to make a good impression, disagreed “Your probably the lazy one, and I will have none of it, now come on we’ve work to do.” Ivan, now cross, had to comply. The first job was to take a ballast train, however the ballast trucks were the ones who had taken the most disliking to Ivans squeak, and began groaning and teasing “Oh no it’s the Squeak Can” said one “Defensive positions lads, he is trying to give us a war on our ability to hear” the trucks laughed hardily at this, Ivan however did not pay attention, he was more occupied with his squeak. As soon as he finished arranging his train, he growled out of the yard in pain, which did nothing to improve the relief drivers mood with the diesel.
“Come on driver please, this is highly irregular for me to be having this squeak, when we get back at the yard we need to check.” Ivan implored “I shall not tolerate this from you” began the Relief Driver” your probably doing this squeaking nonsense to get out of work. No more out of you understand?" However Ivan did not relent as they went along, which caused the two to be distracted from the trucks. “Oi boys” said one of the oldest trucks “They’re distracted, when we get to the grade you know what to do for old sponge here” The trucks quietly agreed, and as the train neared the top, Ivan and the driver were still arguing “Look I understand your young yet, but you need to understand this squeak could mean something serious might be in the realm of possibility to happen, so we need to stop at the yard to check befor- WHOA!” He was then surged on by the truck after arriving at the top, and they were rapidly gaining speed “DRIVER BRAKES!” called Ivan, she did so however then there was a snapping noise which stopped the squeak, but they wouldn’t slow down. “I think my brake system snapped, driver you need to jump clear!” but she didn’t “I’m not about to get in trouble due to you!” and so she applied the handbrakes hard and at the same time turned on the emergency brakes in a hard attempt to stop the train, whilst radioing control about the situation. At last, against the odds, they came to a stop but not before another snapping noise was heard and Ivan dipped foreward a little, the axel to his front wheels in his front bogey had snapped, making him unable to move.
Soon enough the rescue crew arrived, and hoisted Ivan onto a flatbed to take home, whilst giving the driver a ride back. There at the yard the Small controller was there “Ivan, I need you to explain how this happened, it’s not like you to have trucks get the better of you.” Ivan looked at him, and then to the relief driver, who was looking pale as a ghost with fear, at last he spoke “Sir I had developed a squeak in my system over the past weeks due to my workload, it did not start having pains until today, my relief driver would not listen to my requests to check over what could be wrong. I had taken my train of ballast and me and my driver were arguing so much the trucks managed to push me down the hill, my squeak I believe was in my brake system which stopped when we heard a snap, which caused my regular brake system to cease altogether.” The small controller glared at the relief driver “However” he continued “she did not leave me when I had the runaway, and was very brave and adamant to stop me. I Believe without her I may have ended up in a way worse state. She may be young yet, and needs to be taught better on how to work with engines, but it is equally both our faults for the incident.” The Small Controller and the relief driver were amazed, the relief did not expect this engine to defend her after everything.
“Well” started the Small Controller “Whilst I do not appreciate my engines being mistreated by drivers, I am very proud of your bravery Driver Ashely. I Think that maybe a while more in teaching and I shall give you a second chance.” The relief driver felt relieved, and came up to Ivan after the Controller left “Thanks a lot for sticking up for me, I’m very sorry for mistreating you.” She said “It’s alright Ashley, and if you do succeed at becoming a driver, I would be honored to be driven by you.”
With Ivan out of action, another engine would be needed to help handle the work. Whilst the Small Controller worried about this he got a telephone call “Hello?” he asked on the phone “It’s ready for testing.” Came back the voice on the phone. The next morning at the sheds all the engines were concerned about the workload “How are we to get an engine on a short notice like this, especially for the workload our dear Ivan holds” said Mike, secretly he was concerned he’d be rushed off his wheels with Ivans work. “I’m sure the Small Controller has a plan.” Said Rex. The Small Controller then walked up to the engines “With Ivan out of action, I know there’s concern for our line’s handling of the workload, thankfully however the SMR and DHAP have mutually agreed to have their newest engine for both be allocated here until our fellow Ivan is repaired.” The engines were amazed, and Mike was incredibly thankful for this piece of news inside.
Later on as the engines were prepared for work, the engine arrived on Donald’s train on a flatbed, they were bewildered as she looked very strange. When she was unloaded from the flatbed and started moving, no steam came out of her despite her looking similar to a steam build which took the engines by surprise. She then came up to them with the Small Controller on board “Engines, here is Ivans fill in, Princess Gundrun. She is a new build of engine, a diesel hydraulic locomotive just like him, but she is a ‘steam outline’ which is why she isn’t showing steam at all, and will need taught on how to be a really useful engine. Whilst she’ll be mainly taking goods, she will need passenger experience as well so expect to either double head with her or be swapped with her in terms of duties, now she’ll be on goods first, Mike your to help her today up at the mines in 5 minutes, otherwise just carry on as normal.”
After the Small Controller left, Gundrun began chatting “Hello, so what are all your names?” “I’m Rex, that’s Bert, and that’s Mike.” Gundrun looked over to mike and smiled “So you’re the Mike I heard about in the shops, I must say you sound like a very funny engine, erm in a good way I mean.” The other engines chuckled at this, whilst Mike gave her a bewildered look, confused as to why she’d take to him first. “Erm, thanks.” He said at last “Hey head out to the yard, I’ll be with you in a bit to take you to the mines.” She complied and rolled away. “Well Well Well, Mike being admirable, never thought I’d see the day” teased Jock “I just hope she can actually do the work rather than admire me, admirer’s can be trouble I tell you!” The engines did not expect for Mike to not want this attention, they were confused. However before the matter could be discussed more, Mike had to go up to the mines. As he did Gundrun trailed behind, Mike decided to make sure she wouldn’t be distracted “Now look Gundrun, be sure to focus on your work at hand, it would not be proper for your admiration to take priority over your work ok?” “Ok Mike, your really smart too, I can’t believe no one told me.” Mike was cross at this, it seemed his advice on admiration just flowed past her.
When they got to the mines, Mike began teaching her about trucks “Shunt the trucks very carefully and be sure to pay attention to what you are doing, otherwise you may be causing an accident.” “Alright Mike, I’ll do as you say you smart engine.” Mike grew crosser still as he began shunting the trucks, which caused himself to be distracted, there was a buckle in the siding he was puffing towards to so he could get the first trucks for his train, he then bumped into them a bit too hard and the trucks rolled towards the buckle and they came off the rails. “You silly engine!” scolded Mikes driver, Mike felt embarrassed, however Gundrun soothed him “It’s ok, I hear stuff like this can happen to any engine, I’m glad it wasn’t you who derailed as you seem a good teacher.” Mike seethed as the truck was rerailed by the workmen, luckily the derailment wasn’t to serious so they managed to get it back on the tracks in record time. The rest of the day went smoothly, whilst Mike continued to seethe at Gundruns Admiration of him. When the days work was done. The engines had heard about what happened and found it funny “Admirers are nothing but trouble” said an unparticular voice “They don’t focus on their work.” Mike said nothing.
“Horses are strange” said Gundrun one night at the sheds “I can’t believe they used to do jobs us engines do now. Plus everything they do and the way look like just baffle me.” Bert chuckled at this “I once had an experience with a horse name Trojan, he helped my train to the next station when I stalled on the hill, those things are more useful than they let on nowadays, I grew a soft spot for Trojan and felt very sad when he passed away.”
Gundrun was amazed a horse can have such strength, and secretly she hoped she never had to go face to face to one as their strength scared her. The next morning she had to take a passenger train, she had learned how to take them and was now able to handle them on her own, she hoped to make a good run on her own for her first solo passenger train. As the guard blew the whistle and she set off, Gundrun heard a very distant noise of a horse neighing which slightly startled her causing her to slightly jerk the coaches on accident “Steady Girl” called her driver. “Sorry, I just got startled by that noise.” As she went along it began to rain, which grew concerning for her as she stopped at the first station. “Good thing were taking roofed stock today.” Gundrun said in jest. Suddenly in the trees she saw a shadow gallop quickly through it, and just as quickly as it appeared it disappeared. “I don’t think talking to Bert about horse’s was a good idea, my minds playing tricks on me.” She said to herself.
As the day wore on, she continued to hear and think she saw horses, which made her continue to slightly jerk the coaches sometimes, luckily for her the passengers didn’t seem to notice these jerks so it was not an issue to them, but Gundrun felt awful. Eventually she made it to the end of the line and made her way to the turntable, she told her driver what she’d been seeing “Strange, I’ve been having that same occurrence today to.” Said her driver “But what if it’s something serious, like a ghost horse” said Gundrun shuddering at the thought. “Now now, there’s no need to jump to that sort of conclusion. It’s probably the both of us just having an off day.” Her driver replied, as they turned around they heard the sounds of a horse racing through the forest, which made Gundrun even more scared as the guard blew the whistle and she set off.
She was going at a steady safe pace as with rainy weather on a railway you must be careful, and for a while it seemed that Gundruns ‘Ghost Horse’ was really just her and her driver having an off day. She was approaching one of the level crossings, when suddenly she saw something peculiar by the tracks. As she got closer she could make out a dark shape with 4 legs, when suddenly it raced away. Now more than ever she was fearing for her safety from these strange creatures. Later on down the line she was going at a steady pace, then she looked to the line side and saw an animal lying on the ground. “Driver look, that animal might be in trouble, we should check to see if it’s alright.” The driver stopped the train and brought the guard to check on the animal. “Oh my, I think this might be that horse which went missing from one of the farms, she seems to be hurt.” said the Guard. Gundrun felt bad for the animal and wanted to help this horse. “I think we should try and put it on the train, then we can take the horse up to the next station for someone to look at her.” The driver and guard agreed and the horse was helped into the coach by the crews and some of the passengers, the guard stayed with the horse to make sure she wouldn’t fall out of the train or worse. “Alright Gundrun” said her driver “Take it nice and easy.”
They set off very gently, the journey to the next station was very slow going indeed as the combination of circumstances made it so, but with much determination she made it to the station where Bert was with a goods train on the other track. “Well Well Well, it would seem you helped the ‘strange things’ indeed.” Bert quipped “Well I felt very bad for her being injured, it wouldn’t have been right to leave her there especially in the rain.” Gundrun replied. Then Bert saw the horse limping on the platform and was surprised “Gundrun, do you realize what horse you rescued?” Bert asked “No, all I know is that it was a horse.” She replied “That horse is basically Trojans equivalent to a great granddaughter, Lillypad, she had ran away a few weeks ago as I heard from Trojans old owner, thank goodness she’s ok.” Gundrun was surprised at this, but was glad she helped to solve this issue. Before the horse was taken away to the vet, she came up to Gundrun and licked her nose as a way of thanking her. Gundrun laughed and tooted in jest. Soon the horse was taken away and Gundrun continued on her way with her train, now having conquered her queries with horses.
It had been a good 2 months since Ivan went to the works to be mended, however news arrived that he’d be back in a week and Gundrun would be headed to her new home in the Saltburn Miniature Railway. She had proven very useful and capable of jobs thanks to her time on the Arlesdale, however she’d miss everyone dearly, especially Mike. However Mike did not care much and didn’t feel anything for her leaving at all. One night 2 days before her departure Gundrun started chatting “I will miss this line, it’s oh so very lovely, I’ll also miss all of you especially Mike.” Mike grew cross “Gees why can’t you let me be already!” The other engines laughed at first, then saw the downcast expression on Gundruns face as she fell asleep. Rex decided to step in “Mike I just can’t understand why you can’t just get over her admiring you. It’s nice to be admired.” “Look it’s nice from time to time.” Started Mike “However it gets very maddening when they don’t stop doing it and you have to deal with it every single day. Again I like it now and again, but I just mainly want to focus on my work and not have to deal with the constant compliments. Just wish she’d get the message.” With nothing else to day all the engines fell asleep.
The next day was raining again, as the engines woke up preparing for work, the Small Controller came up “Mike and Gundrun I’d like you both to double head a goods train up to Ffarquhar Road with supplies to the farmers.” he said “It’s last minute and I do apologize, but needs must” and he walked away. “Ok Gundrun, you better focus on your work with me today ok?” She gave a sigh and rolled away to the train, pleasing Mike thinking she got the message. As he backed onto the train, he couldn’t help grinning “We’ll finally be on time now you’ve learnt sense” He said as they started off. Again Gundrun said nothing, which now started to make Mike slightly concerned, although he didn’t show it. As they went along every time Mike tried to talk to her, she wouldn’t say a word, which made him even more concerned. “I can’t believe she’d get so quiet just because I taught her a lesson.” Mike said “Well maybe your being too hard on her, it’s ok for people to admire you yet when she does it you give her the cold shoulder. Given she’s only been alive for 2 months first impressions matter very much. Maybe consider that Mike and it might make sense to you.” His Driver said.
Mike thought about it, and he then realized that he indeed had been harsh to the new engine, he wished he could make it up to her, but could not think of what to do. As they rounded a bend Mike saw a Mudslide. “STOP STOP!” He yelled, but it was too late, Mike rammed into the slide hard, firmly wedging him in. Before anyone could say anything else the cavalcade heard a rumble and heard a chilling noise “Another Mudslides Coming, quickly Gundrun PULL MIKE OUT!” yelled Mike’s driver. Gundrun pulled and pulled with all her strength. “She’s not going to make it!” called her driver “NO! We WILL!” Gundrun bellowed, and with a massive heave of strength, Gundrun pulled Mike out of the muck, just in time. The mudslide roared on to the puny pile of mud. Everything soon went quiet, but it was Mike who broke the silence. “Gundrun, thank you very much for saving me. Look, I’m sorry, I should not have complained about your admiration for me. If it wasn’t for you I’d be stuck in the mud for a good while. Can you please forgive me.” There was another gap of silence, and then Gundrun spoke “Yes I do accept you wise engine.” Mike couldn’t have felt more better than in that moment.
The crews radioed control about the situation, meaning unfortunately the railway would have to be closed for a good week to clear the slide. As the cavalcade came back, the Small Controller was there “Mike and Gundrun I’m glad your both ok, and Gundrun I, the DHAP, and the SMR are very proud of your efforts to save our own Mike, otherwise your ‘testing’ would have to be extended. Nonetheless again, well done.” Gundrun felt very happy, and so did Mike. The next day Gudrun was loaded onto a flatbed headed for her new home, everyone else was busy except for Mike, who was able to see her off. “Farewell my Mike” said Gundrun “I can’t wait to see you again.” “Same here” said Mike “Remember though-“ “Less admiration, more working.” She interrupted and the two laughed as Donald headed off into the distance with Gundrun.

Sleeper Agent: But it does answer the apparently eternal question If you specified 'chicken egg' then it's the chicken as only it can lay a chicken egg and if the egg belongs to the newborn it's the chick's egg (and this could of become a cockerel ).

Nicholas: According to the latest theories, the egg came first containing the first chicken, it being a mutation taking place in a zygote from two proto-chickens around 58,000 years ago, themselves having evolved through thousands of years from theropods.
